The odd-job labourers, aged between 34 and 55, were luring the birds when a team of 12 Kelantan Wildlife Department enforcement officers led by its chief Charles Keliang ambushed them at a padi field at 4pm. " Seven men were using nets to catch the birds but fled when they saw the officers, " said Kelantan Wildlife Department director Pazil Abdul Patah. The officers later managed to detain three of the poachers and seized four watercocks and a yellow bittern as well as the equipment used in the activity: three speakers, a radio, a cassette tape and a net. Pazil said the three were released on police bail after their statements were taken. He said initial investigation revealed that the group had been poaching the birds, protected under the Wildlife Act, for several months. He said the birds were to be sold locally at only RM10 for three birds. Pazil said such seizure was the first made by the department so far, and was expecting more of such seizures in future
