Answering to queries on India TV's India Bole live phone-in progamme, on Sunday last, Maneka said programmes and facilities for animal care was virtually absent in the North East. Therefore, plenty of animals were being ill-treated and left uncared for in the Northeast in the absence of such programmes and facilities. She stated that fund for animal care was never a constraint, but what was required was a general sense of empathy towards plight of animals from the general public and government agencies alike. Lauding the outreach programmes for animal care in Guwahati city, she said, it was the only city in the entire region, which was taking care of its animals. In Meghalaya, she said, organizations even misused funds earmarked to set up facilities for animals few years back. " At least 10 organizations in Meghalaya had taken fund to set up facilities for animal care, " she informed. However, none fulfilled their objective and the fund was all misused. The fund was earmarked for procuring ambulances and establishing hospitals for animals and setting up outreach programmes for animals.
