Don't our pets deserve better? - Malaysiakini.com

My Mimi 'Qoink' Mae came to me at a time when I was really down and

out due to some health problems. That was in February 1995 and she was

my loyal canine companion until the day of her ultimate demise on July

31 this year.

Loyalty begets loyalty and so when she was diagnosed as suffering from

mammary gland tumour this April, I vowed to fight for her life with

all my might. After three surgeries, I found a small thickening along

her scar tissue near the rib cage as well as small lumps near her hind

teats. I brought her to a veterinarian in Cheras who did an

ultra-sound.

He assured me that the lumps and thickening might be nothing to worry

about but at the same time referred me to the only animal hospital in

the country that was located in a public university.

This could probably be due to the fact that they had all the necessary

facilities as well as professional expertise to give her the best

treatment ever.

But taking her there was probably the biggest mistake I made. While

the establishment had facilities and expertise, it lacked competence

in every aspect.

Firstly, I believe the expert we were referred to on June 20 may have

contributed to the worsening of Mimi's condition with her treatment

option. My Mimi, who was as active as ever after her surgeries, began

to falter after I followed the vet's directions in dealing with her

health situation.

Secondly, the red tape that appeared at every corner resulted in her

going in for surgery one and a half months after the first

consultation. By then the tumours had grown more than 10 times in size

and the 'scar tissue formation', which was actually a form of

aggressive soft bone cancer, had begun to ulcerate.

So, my question is – why such sub-standard services? Don't our pets

deserve better veterinary care? See my Mimi 'Qoink' Mae's story here.
