Guest guest Posted August 17, 2007 Report Share Posted August 17, 2007 Animal welfare activists to rescue snakes HYDERABAD: Volunteers of several animal welfare organisations will go round the city in view of `Naga Panchami' festival to rescue snakes from snake charmers. Andhra Pradesh State Animal Welfare Board Member Mahesh Agarwal said that `Nagapanchami' festival would fall on Saturday and the volunteers would be on watch from Friday to Sunday for snake charmers who subject the snakes to cruelty by stitching their mouths, breaking their fangs and ultimately killing them. College students were also taking part in the awareness campaign, he said. Volunteers of Bharatiya Prani Mitra Sangh, Blue Cross of Hyderabad, Sahayog Organisation, Prani Mitra Ramesh Jagirdar Memorial foundation, Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Society, Friends of Snakes and Special police officers would be on the lookout for snake charmers mainly in bus stands, slums and railway stations and take custody of the snakes and hand them over to the Forest department which agreed to rehabilitate the snakes, he said. He appealed to the public not to entertain snake charmers and inform the authorities.
