Animal welfare activists to rescue snakes

HYDERABAD: Volunteers of several animal welfare organisations will go

round the city in view of `Naga Panchami' festival to rescue snakes

from snake charmers.

Andhra Pradesh State Animal Welfare Board Member Mahesh Agarwal said

that `Nagapanchami' festival would fall on Saturday and the volunteers

would be on watch from Friday to Sunday for snake charmers who subject

the snakes to cruelty by stitching their mouths, breaking their fangs

and ultimately killing them.

College students were also taking part in the awareness campaign, he said.

Volunteers of Bharatiya Prani Mitra Sangh, Blue Cross of Hyderabad,

Sahayog Organisation, Prani Mitra Ramesh Jagirdar Memorial foundation,

Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Society, Friends of Snakes and

Special police officers would be on the lookout for snake charmers

mainly in bus stands, slums and railway stations and take custody of

the snakes and hand them over to the Forest department which agreed to

rehabilitate the snakes, he said.

He appealed to the public not to entertain snake charmers and inform

the authorities.

Contact numbers

One could contact Ph.No.65531107 or 9394005600 to help authorities and

organisations rescue snakes from the custody of snake charmers, he said.
