Guest guest Posted December 3, 2006 Report Share Posted December 3, 2006 SUNDAY TIMES OF INDIA, ( Taken from the print edition, page no: 03 ) Vets struggle to save injured elephant calf Guwahati: Vetenarians at the College of Veterinary Science here are struggling to cure a two year old female elephant calf, whose spinal cord broke when she was hit by a speeding bus at Rengbeng in Nagaon district recently. The owner of the domesticated calf brought her to the veterinary college on Thursday evening. The veterinarians said the chances of recovery looked bleak, Two surgeons are currently treating the calf. Associate professor Bhupen Sarma said there was no possibility for fitting steel plates to cure a large animals which has fractured its spinal cord. efforts were made to make the calf stand up with the help of a sling, he added. " The calf is under medication and we have kept it under observation. We are trying our best to cure the calf as it is a Schedule 1 animals " , Sarma said. " If the calf fails to show any signs of recovery, the only option is to kill it, which of course has to be approved by the Chief Conservator of Forest. " The calf`s owner. Lutfur rahman, said the baby elephant, her mother, who is also seven month pregnant, and her six-year old elder sister was on their way to Lanka in Hojai subdivision when the mishap took place. " Though people immediately gathered at the accident site and stopped the speeding bus, they could not catch the driver and his helper. Both ran away, " rahman said.
