Guest guest
Dear friends interested in helping animals in India: Animal activists in Bangalore have been on TV, which has been extremely sympathetic and there is much public support as there are public demos and court cases have been filed and will be going to the Supreme Court. The newspapers however have not been supportive (the worst has been The Times of India and the New Indian Express) and animal activists are suing the newspapers for wrong and misleading reporting. As soon as possible hopefully 8 March India time, we will have photos available and emails to write into the Bangalore city corporation. As I cannot send photos to AAPN I will forward them to all of you who have been cc'ed and if you are getting this email on AAPN and want these photos please let me know. For now here is the most important contact to fax in: BMP (Bangalore City Corporation) Mr. Jairaj fax: 080-22223194 email ID will be sent later. Then we all have to get to work. Who can get petitions going? Everyone can write into the BMP and other government officials hopefully! In Bangalore: who can take and post videos to youtube that can go around the world? Verbal reports say dogs are sitting in vans for over 24 hours all packed together and there is no where for them to go. Who can take in these dogs until they can be rehomed as the animal shelters are all full. Where is the voice of the new animal group for India? Other India animal gorups are helping but where is AAPN in terms of constructive help for the AWO's of Bangalore? Thanks to everyone who is working in their own ways whether on the field or writing in on their own on this issue. kind regards, see below reports: a sampling of latest news of the atrocities: Date:06/03/2007 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2007/03/06/stories/2007030620260300.htm http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/NEWS/Cities/Bangalore/Figures_belie_NGOsABC_c\ laims_on_dogs/articleshow/1727123.cms Comment on the above story from an AWO in Banglore. The rest of the words below ARE FROM BANGALORE : " This is malicious reporting. We have been crying ourselves hoarse telling the media that the fully funded " ABC/ARV/Euthanasia " , had started only in April 2003, the year the census was done. The mandate was very clear - the program was only within the 100 wards of Bangalore. 5 agencies viz 4 NGOs and also the Animal Husbandary dept were given specific areas (wards). (25% euthanesia of sick, diseased dogs and dogs identified as ferocious on verification of written complaints has always been a part of the program and finding such dogs is not difficult.) Coming back to the article -- 56 odd thousand was the number in 2003, the year the program started. 166 thousand was the number of sterilisations from the year 2000, when the dog numbers were much higher. All sterilised dogs are vaccinated. Apart from this, the since 2003, there has been a systemic revaccination, on the streets itself, of previously sterilised dogs. 286 thousand vaccinations includes both these categories, and since revaccination is yearly, these figures are of dogs accessed year after year, so Times has recounted the same dogs for 3 years and decided that vaccination numbers are dog numbers. No newspaper has, in the last 2 months, asked us for our side of the story, or what this ABC program actually is. If you can access the Deccan Herald of 6th March, there is a pic on the front page of dogs in vans, one very clearly with a collar. On page 3, there is a photo sequence of a catcher going up the stairs with a woman barring his way. the next pic is of the man dragging the dog down. We are told small children are pointing out hiding dogs to the catchers. the city has gone mad. this is our first experience of how the media can completely control an entire population and literally set a city on fire, and it has shaken us. it is beyond us now, please, please do something. International condemnation of a totally irresponsible LYING media , both tv and press, which has incited a whole city into violence is the only answer. The media is on an all-out offensive against the ABC program, publishing all kinds of outright lies. Any statement by AWO is totally ignored, and on the odd occasion that it is mentioned, it is twisted all out of recognition or captioned provocatively. The kind of frenzy of hate and violence the media has whipped up is sickening. People are stoning dogs, throwing acid on them, dog catchers are barging into houses and taking away dogs. There are ugly political motives at work here as well which I will not comment on here. Another report from Bangalore says: They are stoning every dog in the vicinty. Last week I heard a dog howl and by the time i got out of the house, a few people had stoned a dog to death. So the next day i distributed pamphlets and urged people not to kill them... And if they had problems, not to kill it and if they were not able to contact the appropriate orgs, at least contact me.... I am asking all my friends who work as activists to do so... cos if we dont do something at the root level dogs will be mercilessly killed.
