Guest guest
Put a stop to animal performances - New Straits Times 08 Mar 2007 S.M. MOHD IDRIS, Sahabat Alam Malaysia, Penang SAHABAT Alam Malaysia (SAM) is heartened to know that the proposed amendment to the Wildlife Protection Act will be passed this year. It is high time the Act was amended to ensure adequate protection for all wildlife species. However, SAM is disappointed that animal shows and exhibitions are allowed to operate under a proposed mandatory licensing. As far as SAM is concerned, allowing such show operators to use wildlife exhibits serves no purpose except monetary gains for them. There is hardly any concern for the welfare of the animals, which are often kept in miserable conditions. No appropriate steps have been taken to initiate drastic and immediate changes to improve the lot of the captive animals. Basically, these facilities represent life imprisonment for the animals and they are little more than money-spinners that cloak themselves in the guise of education. The animals are forced to live as exhibits that gratify the human desire to see something different and a show of man's supremacy over them. SAM is shocked at the Kuantan Municipal Council secretary's ignorance for non-compliance with the proposed Wildlife Act by allowing performances with dangerous animals or pet animals. There should be uniformity of laws governing such exhibits and the council should work in tandem with the federal authorities to weed out such performances. The Act should also be amended to ensure that there will be no animal performances or wildlife exhibits.
