Elephant hit by train breaks legs, lands in ravine

By : Junita Mat Rashid

SEGAMAT: An elephant crossing a railway line in Bekok early yesterday

sustained two broken hind legs when it was hit by a train.

The impact of the collision flung the animal, believed to be 10 years

old and weighing about a tonne, into a 15m ravine near the tracks.

Wildlife and National Parks Department officers and doctors from the

Veterinary Services Department were trying to save the elephant, which

was reported to be in critical condition.

It is understood it would be put to sleep if efforts to save it

failed. The train, which started its journey from Kuala Lumpur, was

heading for Singapore when the incident happened at 4.50am.

The driver lodged a report at the Paloh police station near Yong Peng at 7am.

None of the train passengers were hurt in the incident, which

attracted the attention of many, some of whom were feeding sugarcane

to the elephant. The animal is said to have come from a herd living in

a nearby jungle.

Following reports of wild animals crossing the tracks, Keretapi Tanah

Melayu Bhd drivers have been told to slow down when passing the area.

Elephants have been spotted frequently crossing the tracks between

Labis and Bekok.

On Nov 2, 2004, two 4.5 tonne female elephants died while another was

injured when they were hit by a train near Labis.

Three elephants, including a calf, escaped unscathed in the 7pm incident.
