Guest guest
2007/05/20 -New Straits Times (NST) Sarawak considers culling crocodiles KUCHING: After a surge in crocodile attacks in the first four months of the year, Sarawak may be forced to cull the man-eaters to " a level which does not threaten humans " . Sarawak's chief park warden Wilfred Landong said a study was being conducted to find the cause of the sudden increase in attacks compared with the last two years. Three people have been killed and one seriously injured in a spate of attacks this year, raising concern at the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) which oversees the management of wildlife in the state. " We are trying to minimise the attacks. Culling may be one of the options, " Landong said. However, he said the approval of Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, also the minister of resource planning and management that oversees SFC, would be sought first. Landong believed the crocodile population in the state had increased since it was declared a protected animal 10 years ago. Under present laws, crocodile killers can be sentenced to a year in jail and/or a fine of RM10,000. " There is a link between protection and the surge in attacks. With their growing numbers, the crocodiles are forced to compete for food and space with humans. "
