On Monday Saba and her father had gone to a Sufi shrine to witness Urs celebrations after which they slept close to the shrine, located in a deserted place. ''We fell asleep and we were unaware when the dogs took our child away and mauled her,'' said Gyasuddin, victim's father. Every month 600 people attacked by stray dogs come to the district hospital where anti-rabies vaccination is rarely available. Last year a PIL was filed over the stray dog menace and the High Court had passed an order for elimination of rabies-infected dogs. But after nothing happened a contempt petition was filed. ''No action was taken after the first petition so we have filed a contempt petition and now this incident has taken place,'' said Satish Verma, petitioner. The Jabalpur municipal corporation had stated a sterilisation drive, which was stopped mid-way. ''We want to begin an elimination drive but the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act often acts as a deterrent. If a solution is suggested, we are ready to follow it,'' said Sushila Singh, Mayor, Jabalpur. Until that happens people had better watch out while moving on Jabalpur streets.
