Guest guest
2007/06/01-NST Sarawak Killer: It's not right to kill the crocodile By : NANDAR KUMAR VARATHARAJALOO, Kuala Lumpur I REFER to the article over the killing of a crocodile in Sarawak ( " Villagers dish out death to man-eater " — NST, May 27). The article also posted a picture of a man sitting on the dead reptile. If this photo was not in colour, I would have thought that it was from the age of the Maharajas and Viceroys of India shooting and killing elephants and tigers. The justification for the killing was that the crocodile had killed a man. I regret the loss of a human life in this case. But aren't we failing to see that these animals were in their natural habitat? They only did what was natural to them. In the name of development, we encroached on their territory. We, the humans, went into the jungles, the rivers and the swamps. Not only did we go in, we even destroyed most of it. The authorities in India and Australia protect the " man-eating " tiger and the shark. In this age and time, it is just beyond my understanding of how any governing authority can allow endangered animals to be treated this way in Malaysia. It is simply illegal. I strongly urge the authorities and the media to act responsibly to educate the public on this issue. And as a final plea, please refrain from publishing similar acts of killing animals in such a fashion. In present times, it is just not acceptable.
