Subject : R.A.W. is opposing Elephant polo on 18th Nov 06.

 

 

 

Sir,

 

City's prime Animal Rights Group " Revolutionaries for Animal Welfare " is

opposing The Elephant Polo. The event is being sponsored by Cartier the

famous international watch and jewellery company and organized by Elephant

Family U.K.

 

RAW feels that this event is an act of cruelty against animals in the name

of welfare. Elephants are being exploited through such an event.

 

Organiser Mark Shand of Elephant Family called elephant polo a traditional

Royal sport. RAW President Mr. Anupam Jain said, " Royalties in olden times

used to organise a number of barbaric sports like hunting, elephant fights,

snake-mongoose fight, bull fight etc but all these so called traditional

royal sports were banned in due course of time as people have now realised

that all these sports are barbaric in nature. He further remarked that in

the name of tradition we should not follow cruel practices, it is no more a

reign of monarchs.He also remarked that it is a game of power, wealth and

politics in the name of heritage.

 

The organizers said that the event is being organized to give dignity back

to the Asian elephants. Many national and international celebrities will

come to attend this mega event. It is basically being organized to boost

tourism in Jaipur.

 

Maneka Gandhi has put an end on the use of animals in circus and

entertainment industry long back, in that case this event is also for the

entertainment of tourists.

 

The organizers say that funds will be raised through this event, but RAW

finds this a very strange way of raising funds. Elephants are being used to

fund raise for their own welfare,

 

Mr.Jain said, " The sponsors are saying that this is to help conservation

efforts of Asian elephants. There will be celebrity rides during the event

and later on those celebs will tell us what is wrong with the

elephants.There are other equally good ways of fund raising like elephant

photo exhibition, painting exhibition, or a charity show. Moreover Cartier

can give away money for the welfare of elephants without any event. Charity

should not be given on conditions. "

 

He further stated that RAW is not against Help In Suffering the NGO working

for animal cause in Jaipur. We are just opposing the Polo event.

 

Anupam said, " Our activists are keeping an eye on this event. The participant

elephants were brought at the venue on the 16th evening. They were not able

sleep due to change of place. In fact on the day of event they might become

irritable and dizzy due to lack of sleep. We are further collecting

evidences to prove the cruelty for a complete ban on this event.

 

He said, " RAW is protesting against it on the event day " .

 

The general secretary Rohit Gangwal said , " It is just the beginning we would

continue this opposition till the elephant festival which is being held in

March next year. Our aim is to stop all such activities which involve

torturing of animals. We are commited to our term " revolutionary " and with

the help of other animal rights organizations across the country we will

succeed in putting a ban on elephant polo, tug of war and other such events.
