Additional Director of Municipal Administration V. Pichai said the State Government had allotted Rs. 5.38 crore for implementing the scheme in 50 municipalities and six Corporations. The funds would be used to create basic infrastructure to get street dogs operated on. After sterilisation, the animals would be administered anti-rabies vaccine and the dosage would be repeated annually for five years, he said. Satisfactory results were expected in six months, Mr. Pichai added. Chinni Krishna of Blue Cross of India described the project as " pro-people. " He said the motive was not to eliminate street dogs, but to reduce their number. Animal Welfare Board of India vice-chairman V. N. Appaji Rao said the mushrooming of multi-storey apartment complexes had resulted in an increase in solid waste. Careful disposal of edible waste and keeping streets free from garbage could reduce the problems posed by dogs by more than half. He said production of oral anti-rabies vaccine in India was likely to begin soon and the procedure of injecting the animals could be avoided. Such schemes could succeed only with an active public participation, Mr. Rao added.
