Guest guest
Save island-New Straits Times 06 Oct 2006 GERVIN TEH, Ipoh -- THE news highlighting the damage inflicted on Pulau Tioman's marine life ( " Paradise Lost? " — NST, Sept 24) came as a shock to me. As warned by ecologists, unless action is taken, precious corals will be destroyed. The damage we are witnessing now reflects humans' indifference and irresponsibility towards preserving nature. I am certain foreign tourists do not travel hundreds or thousands of miles to visit Pulau Tioman for its highly developed facilities. They instead want to experience nature at its best. Nothing can replace the beauty of nature. I hope effective steps will be taken to save the beauty of Pulau Tioman. --\ Island's beauty placed at risk 06 Oct 2006 I.L.N. Kuala Lumpur I AGREE that Pulau Tioman is a truly beautiful island. However, with the proposed development of the airport, marina, etc, its natural beauty might be destroyed. I think the government should not encourage the " concrete " development of such beautiful islands. Instead, they should try to preserve the beauty of the coral reefs, the beaches and the sea creatures. The building of airports, roads, marinas and resorts might cause the coral reefs to be polluted or damaged. The dust from the construction site could sink to the sea bed and cover the corals. The corals cannot breathe and cannot carry out photosynthesis. Eventually, they will die. The result of efforts to develop Pulau Tioman could be that tourists would be reluctant to visit a damaged island.
