Dogs killed indiscriminately in Mandya

Maya Sharma

Watch story

Tuesday, March 13, 2007 (Mandya):

It was in Bangalore that two small children died this year after

being bitten by street dogs.

Apart from stepping up the collection of dogs, the City Corporation

is firm in its stand that dogs are not being indiscriminately killed

in this city.

But in Mandya, which is another city in Karnataka, dogs - even

healthy ones - were caught and killed on the spot.

Population control

The act was not only horrifying and cruel but also against the law.

There are rules that absolutely forbid the killing of healthy street

dogs.

They are instead meant to be sterilised, vaccinated and released

once again in the area in which they have been caught, under the

Animal Birth Control or ABC rules.

And those who care for animals are absolutely horrified by what

happened in Mandya.

" There were six to seven harmless dogs. Even a lactating mother dog

was caught with wire and killed. Her puppies, even though alive,

were thrown on a tractor, " said Savitha Nagabhushan, animal welfare

activist.

" It is barbaric, it is absolutely inhuman and it is illegal. And it

should not be taking place under any circumstances - not this kind

of killing even for diseased animals, " said Suparna Ganguly, Vice-

President CUPA.

Inhuman act

In fact, even if the animals were ferocious or sick, it is illegal

to kill them in this fashion.

" It is absolutely illegal and against the Central Dog rules

initiated in 2001 where it makes it mandatory for every district

administration to initiate the Animal Birth Control rules, " added

Suparna Ganguly.

Ramaswamy, the District Commissioner of Mandya, said that dogs in

his city had indeed been killed by two so-called experts from Kerala

who had been called in by the state government to reduce the dog

population in Bangalore.

He also said that he did not know hom many dogs had been killed this

way and that the killing had totally stopped after a call from

Menaka Gandhi.

Even dogs presumed to be ferocious or ill are meant to be examined

by a vet before being euthanised.

What happened in Mandya is totally against the law of the land and

also the unwritten law of humanity.
