Guest guest
Seven days after the notice was given we were prepared for the worst, but fortunately nothing happened, they didn't come to evict us... probably the police informed them about our entry and they decided to wait until an inquiry is being held. So for the moment we are a bit relaxed, but have to be careful with the number of dogs we take in because the danger may not yet be over. The story behind this: when the Municipality handed over the dog-pound to be transformed into a ABC center, we were allowed to use the adjoining building also, which was an empty hall, originally build to be used as a slaughter-house, but due to resistance from a closeby temple the slaughter-house was never shifted to its new building. Since the dog-pound has space only for 20 dogs (max 30), this empty hall came handy because we are bound to take in abandoned puppies and grown up dogs, which cannot be returned to the place of capture for various reasons... 60-80 dogs are usually being held in that hall, their kennels are mostly portable cages, but they have no proper roofing to be used outside and some dogs stay behind partionings, which we fixed inside the hall. In our legal battle to save the Kandy dogs from being killed (see www.sofakandy.org), we won a court-order, which protects us from being evicted from the dog-pound, but suddenly Dr.Jayasinghe must have thought, that the proposed slaughter-house is not really part of the dog-pound and therefore he could ask us to vacate it. It's odd, that we are voluntarly doing their duty without receiving the slightest support... on the contrary being always obstructed. What an upside-down world we live in!
