Guest guest
The Hindu Wednesday, October 25, 2006 Twenty-three camels rescued in Gulbarga Special Correspondent GULBARGA: Twenty-three camels, which were being taken for slaughter, were rescued on Monday, thanks to the timely intervention of members of the Nandi Animal Welfare Society and officials of the district administration and Forest department. On a tip-off that camels were being taken to Gulbarga city from Aland, members of the animal welfare society alerted the district administration and the Forest department. And the animals, which were being brought by agents to slaughterhouses, were rescued. During questioning by Forest department officials, the agents reportedly confessed that the animals were being transported to slaughterhouses. None of the 23 camels were infirm or old, they were young and healthy, the officials said. The Act clearly states that only infirm and old animals should be slaughtered and that slaughtering of healthy animals is an offence. --- -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O.
