By Joellen Secondo, Best Friends Network Neighbors of an eight-month-old baby and his parents rescued the family from their burning house in South Kolkata. Two brothers, who lived next door, allegedly set the house on fire in an attempt to kill the family. The only one not immediately rushed to the hospital was the family's six-year-old dog, who was tied up inside the house. Concerned police officers heard the cries of the dog and contacted Subhas Kalsar, the chief para-vet of the Pet Clinic in Tollygunge run by Compassionate Crusaders Trust (CCT). Subhas was at the scene within minutes and entered the burning house to find the dog huddled in a corner and in shock. Subhas rushed the barely-alive dog to the Clinic for immediate treatment. She was soon shifted to ASHARI (Animal Shelter Hospital and Research Institute), run by CCT's sister organization, People for Animals Calcutta (PfA). ASHARI's expert veterinarians re-hydrated the dog and treated an injury to her eye and burns on her limbs. By evening, the dog, re-christened " Kali, " was out of shock and able to drink water. Another savior soon arrived on the scene; a local woman, Uma Rao, stepped forward to pay for Kali's treatment. Debasis Chakrabarti, managing trustee of PfA-Calcutta, expressed appreciation for everyone involved with Kali's rescue, " We are thankful to police too for their concern about a dog, which many in local press reported dead. But Kali is with us and safe. In a grisly crime attempt, the dog's rescue by the police and animal lovers is a symbol of hope perhaps.
