MARK, Johor Baru WE use dogs for crime prevention, to bust pirates and as tracker dogs to sniff out trapped victims in landslides and other disasters. But instead of appreciating this wonderful animal, we read reports that there are people in authority who are keen to shoot them in cold blood. Stray dogs are not the menace, irresponsible owners are. To some people, stray cats are also a menace but we never hear of the authority wanting to shoot them. Therefore, I feel the best way to solve this problem of stray animals is to educate pet owners — regardless of the type of pet. I love dogs but am not a dog owner because I strongly believe that if you cannot spare the time, you should not have a dog as a pet. My experience with dogs has been wonderful so far. Most of the time when I meet a dog, I make it a point to approach it in a non-threatening manner. Sometimes I even pat its head. My friendly approach has always worked because the dog would wag its tail, a sign of acceptance. So, the next time you come across a dog, treat it as you would treat a human being. Do not start throwing stones at it or provoke it because chances are it would attack out of sheer instinct and self-defence. Spare a thought for this wonderful animal. Don't be nice to them only because we need them to do a job for us and then, on the other hand, treat them as a menace to society.
