Eagles, crows, parrots now prefer staying in a cool dark room at the veterinary hospital in Parel as the heat is taking its toll in Mumbai and among those suffering the most are birds. ''They have given up eating and have respiratory distress. We have been giving them the necessary treatment, antibiotics multi vitamins and oral drops,'' said Ashish Sutar, Vetenerarian. About 70 birds of different species are admitted in this hospital. Experts believe depleting forests, global warming, drying lakes are reasons why the birds are falling prey to the heat. Because of all the sky scrapers they are forced to leave their habitat. They are also forced to fly long distances in search of food and water. When they don't find any, they keep on flying,'' said Jagdish Khanna, BSPCA. Concrete monstrosities and soaring temperatures have taken a heavy toll on these birds. So they've traded in free flights for the cosy confines of a hospital.
