Lions in Gir killed with poisoned bait, traps

Junagadh (Gujarat), April 04: Investigations into the poaching of

Asiatic lions in Gir Wildlife Sanctuary have indicated that a gang of

at least eight persons was involved in brutally killing the endangered

cats with poison, traps and sharpened bamboo sticks.

No arrest has been made in connection with the killing of four

grown-up lions and two cubs in separate incidents in March, but

several people, including serving and retired forest officials and

local villagers, were questioned, police sources said on Wednesday.

A man linked to a forest guard in Gir sanctuary is being subjected to

forensic tests at the directorate for forensic sciences (DFS) in

Gandhinagar to obtain clues in the case, they said.

The sources said the probe by the CID (crime) and DFS indicated that

the animals were probably lured by using poisoned bait and caught in

traps. Sharpened bamboos were then used to stab them to death, they said.

A trap and parts of the bamboo sticks have been found near the site

where the remains of two grown male lions and a cub were recovered in

Babariya range, just seven kilometres from a checkpost, on March 23.
