Guest guest
Link: http://www.evana.org/index.php?id=24220 India: Zubeen Garg, member of ' People for Animals', has mesmerized the nation 2 August 2007 Youth icon of India popular singer/ composer Zubeen Garg who hails from Assam and has mesmerized the nation with his heart rendering songs that have been topping the Bollywood charts in recent times has decided to venture on a new mission. A member of ' People for Animals' since 1995 Zubeen yesterday composed a song dedicated to wildlife conservation and to the animals of Kaziranga. It is the recent loss of ten Rhinos since January 2007 and other wildlife such as deer due to accidental deaths along the national Highway 37 that passes through the National Park that moved Zubeen to come forward and bring along a team of of renowned cultural artistes of this region and painters to take a pledge to save the wildlife in distress. After the roadshow Zubeen who also is a keen wildlife activist went to the WTI and State Forest department`s Wildlife Rescue and Rehab Centre (CWRRC) at Kaziranga where he observed the vets treating injured hog deer, a rescued black cobra and other victims of road accident and floods, he also released three hog deer into wild. The deer were rescued and treated at the centre and were ready for release. One can hope Zubeen`s wildlife campaign to go a long way in involving the general public as he has a huge fan following in the Assamese society, almost 100%. Zubeen was also in Manas National park recently and is taking keen interest in contributing to bring a change over there as well. We get to hear of a lot of celebrities making appeals from their drawing rooms but this young man as a true animal person goes to the ground, understands the situation, keeps contacts with the authorities on a personal basis and so this Man`s appeal certainly makes a lot of sense and we can hope. I have in the past covered his live performances, and I have seen people going all crazy the moment he appears on stage or is spotted anywhere. Yesterday too children and the youth from schools and colleges thronged in large numbers in the upper assam town of Bokhaghat to listen him render the wildlife song. They later joined him in the 30km long road show to Kaziranga where another hundreds of people gathered to listen to the son of the soil making a pledge. Yesterday too Zubeen shared his views with me of his plans of getting involved with many International Organisations as well so that along with awareness and appeals he can contribute in generating some funds to uplift the wildlife enforcement in the state. It may be noted that Assamese people have in the past managed to nab an IAS Official holding a senior post in the Nagaland Government shooting rhesus macaques in the outskirts of Kaziranga and handed him along with his associates to the forest authorities. It was again the people of Assam who last month nabbed a Member of Parliament and his guards shooting wild birds and got them arrested. Many poachers too have been arrested or killed due to the massive local public support in Assam. With Zubeen coming forward it only lifts the spirits of a community which is already fighting a battle hard to save its wildlife from being lost.
