Clarification on Save Rani Bagh - Mumbai petition

Dear colleagues,

I must question the validity of this petition as

someone who surveyed Bombay Zoo and suggested its closure. I asked the

sender of this petition to clarify the content which he did not and

therefore feel it necessary to present the other side of the argument. This

petition seeks to save what is in essence one of the most terrible zoos in

existence in India or anywhere else. Whilst there can be discussion on

saving the Botanical Garden and keeping the zoo premises inviolate as

natural surroundings, the zoo animals in Bombay have nothing to gain from

staying on in the premises at Jijabai Udyan. Several members of AAPN have

surveyed the zoo, including John Wedderburn, who told me that although the

place had a lot of beautiful trees, he was horrified to see what lay amidst

them. Therefore, I clearly state that if the Bombay Zoo is being shifted

from its current premises, it is for the benefit of the animals, and if the

animals are gone from Jijabai Udyan, I for one, will celebrate. In short, I

am opposed to what this petition is trying to achieve.

Best wishes and kind regards,

Sincerely yours,

A similar outrage was seen within political parties in West Bengal when

there was a move to shift the Alipore (Kolkata) Zoo from its present

location.

I do not know what the current situation is at the moment with regards to

the shifting of the zoo, perhaps our Kolkata friends can throw some light

into it.

I have visited the Bombay Zoo and strongly feel that the inmates need to be

shifted asap and preferably the Zoo closed down.

I would certainly ask the author of the petition to immediately remove the

petition from being circulated and if he still feels it is necessary for the

petition to do the rounds then please explain, WHY ?
