Guest guest
Saturday April 14, 2007 - The Star 'Thoracic sticking' in killing livestock is halal KUALA LUMPUR: The National Fatwa Council has ruled that the " thoracic sticking " method of slaughtering livestock, as used in New Zealand, is allowed and that meat from these animals is halal, subject to stipulated conditions. Veterinary services director-general Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin said the council made the decision at its meeting on Sept 29 last year. Thoracic sticking is a procedure that involves severing the major blood vessels around the heart with a knife to drain the blood after slaughtering. Dr Abdul Aziz said the method was allowed because the procedure complied with conditions, like proper slaughter of the animals and proper blood discharge, and was supervised by authorised Muslims. Dr Abdul Aziz said an audit carried out by his department and the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) on abattoirs in New Zealand between May 7 and May 30 last year found several procedures that did not meet Malaysia's halal standard. The procedures include electrical immobilisation and spinal discharge, which uses an electric current to keep the animal from struggling too much during slaughter and reducing the incidence of injury to animal handlers. He said more checks on New Zealand abattoirs would be carried out next week from April 19 to April 28. In accordance with the Malaysian halal standard, only electrical stunning to the head is allowed. The import of beef from New Zealand between 2000 and 2005 amounted to between 5% and 8% of the total beef import, while the import of mutton from New Zealand made up 34% to 50% of total import. – Bernama
