Instead of targetting illegal structures, the Tamil Nadu Highways Department is quite literally barking up the wrong tree! Over the last few weeks, about 15 trees, most of them 100-years-old, have been felled. The reason: to widen roads. " The government spends money on eco parks and at the same time cuts heritage trees that are a 100-years-old, " said Swetha Narayan, Environmental Activist. Chennai Chipko movement Local residents, who planted some of these trees, are furious. So they have launched what they call the " Chennai Chipko " movement by hugging trees that are due to be cut. " It was heartbreaking for me because the tree that was cut was the tree I had planted 50 years ago. They talk about global warming and is this the answer? " said Brig Ramani, Resident. " In Chennai, about 800 vehicles get added everyday. The only way to purify the air is through trees, " added M B Nirmal, Founder President, Exnora. Officials of the Highways Department have refused to comment. But sources say the plan to cut more trees may be shelved due to public pressure.
