(PTI): This city's oldest zoo will shut its doors to visitors to facilitate a complete make-over of the almost 150-year-old institution that will take about two years. " A race is on to complete the project before its sesquicentennial year, with zoo authorities and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) going ahead in full speed following approval of renovation concepts, " BMC's Additional Municipal Commissioner R A Rajeev said on Wednesday. With the delineation of " global mapping " approved, the zoo, begun in 1862, will go hi-tech in many areas, including the setting up of a 4D-theatre, an amphitheatre and plazas. According to concepts, Indian and African enclosures will greet visitors as they enter, and Australian and South East Asian ones would mark its far-end. The " continents " and walk-ways around them will touch the " shores of a water body representing the Indian Ocean " . The trappings are aimed at " making the zoo more visitor-friendly, educative and entertaining " , Rajeev said. As commercial trading in animals is not allowed, the zoo will enhance its animal collection with contributions from other zoos. " Those animals already here will be looked after within the zoo till such time as it re-opens, " he said. " All inhabitants will be placed in environments close to their natural surroundings, " Rajeev said.
