Jumbos come to Hojai town

By A Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 19 – Tension gripped Hojai town today after a herd of

elephants entered a part of it and stayed put for several hours.

Senior civil and police officials, who rushed to the spot, tried to

evacuate people from the vicinity of the elephants, and had to finally

impose a curfew. It took sustained efforts for the district officials

and forest personnel before the herd could be chased out of the town

in the evening. According to sources in the forest department, there

were two herds and together numbered around 100.

For several hours from morning they roamed around the campus of the

Hojai College. The herd also contained a number of very young calves.
