Guest guest
Cops rescue Indian Bull Frogs Guwahati, Tuesday 10 April, 2007 The Guwahati Railway Police a wing of the Assam Police department today seized 71 numbers of Indian Bull Frogs (Hoplobatrachus tigerinus)which was en route out of Guwahati. The smuggler though managed to flee. It is believed that this species is a delicacy and is consumed mostly in the state of Nagaland in this region. But since this consignment was comming from Halflong - the hill district of Assam and was in transit in Guwahati, wildlife officials believe that the destination could well have been Kolkata city. On getting the information of the seizure Wildlife Officials rushed to the police outpost and rescued the animals. They have now been taken to the Assam State Zoo here where the veterinary persons shall attend to and preferably tomorrow they will be released in Deepor Beel a wetland in Guwahati which is also a Ramsar site. Members of NGO, Aaranyak which include young biologist Firoze Ahmed also paid a visit to check the welfare of the frogs. The animals seemed to be stressed out but in good health.
