Guest guest
Guwahati, 17/07/2007 Time: 13:15 hrs (IST) A young elephant calf was found dead near the Deepor Beel a Ramsar site wetland in Guwahati. Local wildlife activist Lakhan Teron who gave the news said that the death could be due to the calf being trampled by the elephant herd which had descended to the wetland from the adjacent Rani reserve forest. Deepor Beel is quite popular for its unique bio diversity and its aquatic plants which are a favorite food for the wild elephant herds and also the migratory birds which breed every season. There have been many elephant deaths in the past where many calves have died after getting stuck in the marshy land or falling victims to Train accidents as there is a railway track which goes through the wetland. The Deepor Beel is still under neglect from the forest department since the proposed sanctuary status lies pending. Massive fishing in the prohibited site is controlled by the local mafia. Most of the fishing is done during night in the dark. The oars of the fishermen have caused extensive damage to the floating aquatic plants as the fishermen use their paddles on the plants for faster momentum in the waters. It has been more than 12 hours but officials of the forest department are yet to reach the spot following which I called up the DFO, Wildlife (Guwahati), Mr. Surajit Dutta and informed him about the news. he has asked his people to rush there.
