Parliament slaughter demeaning-Malaysiakini.com

I refer to malaysiakini report 'Bloodshed' in Parliament.

We are disappointed that the august House had been turned into an

abattoir to end the lives of the animals to feed the MPs. With no

offence to the newly-wedded couple, such an act was abhorrent in a

place we hold dearly as the highest lawmaking body in Malaysia.

The reply from the speaker of House on the incident was very degrading

and he shouldn't allow such things to happen in the first place. He

easily abdicated his responsibility. Secondly, the Backbenchers Club

acting chairman's remark to the press was sarcastic and arrogant.

If the MPs and the Parliament officials want to give a party to the

couple, by all means rent a hall or ballroom for the function.

Parliament is not your everyday building where you can do what you

like.

It seems that in the post-Mahathir era, some of the MPs act like loose

cannons without any control and everybody makes decisions by

themselves just to try and please Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad

Badawi.

We are also upset that none of the BN MPs of Hindu, Buddhist faiths

and other concerned MPs didn't voice the displeasure over such an act

which was very demeaning. We don't mind if the slaughter was done at a

'surau', (mosque) or someone's house as it would have been a private

matter.

But not in a public institution like the Parliament. It is time for

Pak Lah to rein in the BN representatives before they do more damage

to the image of the BN coalition. The 'rakyat' (public)are becoming

more conscious of what is happening around them.

Slaughter attracts world attention

Many a report and letters have condemned the slaughter of cows and

goats in Parliament. But I see it in a different light.

As almost all Malaysians have come to know, our nation has lost most

of its competitive edge in most of the global fields. We were once

football giants in this region and today we are just minnows compared

even to the tiny dot down south. We reigned supreme in badminton in

early 60s or 70s but today the Thomas Cup is a distant dream.

Our education system is in a confused state, producing graduates who

can't string a complete sentence in English and many of them end as

unemployable. Neither could we boast of an economy that is strong

enough not to go a begging from the 'tiny red dot' to support the

Iskandar Development Region project.

In short, we have nothing to shout about and many investors or

tourists have bypassed us.

Thus to attract attention, we resorted to do stupid things. We finance

Mat Rempits to parachute down to the North Pole. Then we have the

biggest dumpling made for our own version of the Guinness Book of

Records. The list goes on.

Parliament slaughter was necessary

Whatever it is, let it be. In the coming election, BN will come back

to power with a majority. The reason is because they knew they could

lose badly in this coming general election so they had consulted the

'bomoh' (shaman).

The 'bomoh' advised them to slaughter the animals for the guardian

'panglimas' (spirits) [datuk-datuk - Lord Muniswarer - Tua Peh Kong]

of the Parliament building. They then covered this up by using the

excuse of having a 'kenduri' for Pak Lah' marriage and that the

animals had to be slaughtered.

Actually, BN allied parties like MIC, Gerakan, MCA knew about this

matter earlier and they never objected the idea of sacrificing animals

in the Parliament grounds. They pretended that they were not

consulted.

Even on the day of the slaughter, the Hindu and Buddhist BN parties

should have objected and highlighted it to the media. They didn't -

not until the whole thing was exposed by DAP.

By the way, I will try to find out which 'bomoh' they had consulted

and inform your readers later. If the opposition is to win the

election, they have to counter the animal sacrifice by consulting

their own god or goddess before the full moon on July 29.

Good luck.
