Guest guest
When I was totally vegetarian, my mother would make " salmon " for me when I came over. When I told her that that was not vegetarian, she would get angry and say that she didn't know what to make me. If I brought my own food she would get insulted that I didn't like her cooking. One time I said that I would bring my own and she said not to that she would make me something and when I came over she had made me beef because she said that I don't get enough red meat. I told her I couldn't eat that. I ate the side dishes and left the meat on the plate. Boy was she angry for a long time about that. You have to give your relatives ideas of what you will eat or they will keep on making inappropriate things. My suggestion. Since I'm vegan, I always make something special to take along when going to anyone's home to eat (with very few exceptions) and folks always seem to welcome it. Food is weird - some folks think the only way they can show you love is by cooking for you, so if you turn down the food it's like you're turning down their affection. For close relatives, I give them a vegan cookbook or two to get them started. My parents have been very understanding, but my mom still makes *our* cornbread, and then a pan of the " regular " cornbread for everyone else. Then she'll have a piece of ours, and say " this really isn't bad! " (meaning ' " Hey, this is really good! " )...but she'll do the same darned thing the next time. It's like the vegan food is somehow....inferior. <Sigh.> Oh, well - at least she doesn't try to force-feed me beef like Risa's mom! :-) My in-laws have actually gone veg since I joined the family. They're not vegan, but hey - I'm not complainin'! And that's after my m-i-l got all put out with me because her son had gone from being a " weird " vegetarian to being a " really weird " vegan after he met me. You just never know how these things are going to turn out. OK - since this is totally *not* a recipe, I'd better post something proper. See next post.
