Chris from what I know IBS is usually caused by a wheat allergy.

Anything with wheat will trigger the symptoms. There

are sites with recipes for those who have this problem -

http://www.panix.com/~donwiss/

Try a web search for Celiac Disease. There are some really good

articles about this disease and many recipes without

gluten. - Jenny

Hi Chris

I also have IBS-D variety. I don't know what your mom has, but my bowel was very

bad. The doctor said live with it... nice guy! Anyways, I researched a fair

amount, and now am basically symptom free.I changed my diet. No more meat or

dairy. Also I quit all caffeine and soft drinks. Ask her to try this for a while

to see if it helps. Also food journaling helps. When you do this, often you will

find foods that trigger attacks... Hope this helps. If you have any other

questions feel free to ask.

Hi Chris:

I'm 37 and I've had IBS for a number of years. I know there are new

mediations available for IBS suffers but I haven't tried them

myself. I believe IBS is something that can be controlled with self

help. For me, diet and exercise helped a lot. Especially stomach

exercises! I found my IBS triggers when I'm really stressed and not

taking proper care of myself. Diet is really important. Your mom

may find certain foods trigger her IBS than others. I started

keeping a journal of what I ate and soon found a pattern to when I

wasn't feeling well due to my IBS.

I also found a homeopathic remedy on MOthernauture.com called Silicea

(Silicic Acid). Silicea is used for bowel problem but also acts as a

skin healing agent (acne). I've never had any side effects from it

and I only take it when my IBS is acting up.

Hope this helps. IBS can be a very stressful and uncomfortable

situation but it IS manageable. Take Care!

Hi Chris,

I suffered from IBS when I was younger. I couldn't eat out and

vacations were miserable for me. I started eating cereal with fruit

every morning (mostly Cheerios with a banana or raisin bran) and cut

back on protien and the symptoms disappeared. If i skip the cereal a

couple of days I'm in trouble again.

Chris:

I posted a reply to you yesterday but it didn't post for some reason

so I'm trying it again.....

I am 37 (yikes!) and I've had IBS for a number of years. ( " HI SAM! "

I feel like I'm confessing a drinking problem or something)

Anyways, there are medications on the market to help IBS suffers.

I've never tried them myself. I've found that diet and especially

exercise are a big part of controlling this demanding condition.

Your mom really should start to keep a journal. A journal of what

she eats along the side of her condition. If she is like some woman

I know she will soon see a connection between her IBS and certain

foods she eats.

I also found a homeopathic remedy called Silicea (Silicic Acid. I

bought this at mothernature.com. I came across this remedy for IBS

by accident. I was actually looking for something to help my adult

acne (boy, aren't you learning a lot about me today!) Silicea also

helps in the bowel department. I've never had any side effects from

it and I only take it when needed to help stay " regular " .

OK well now....now that you know more than any stranger should know

about me.....just remember diet and exercise.....water and green

tea....any veggie green!...its an annoying condition and some times

embarrassing too but it can be controlled or managed.....take care,

Sam.

Hi CHRIS; tell your mom to check out www.eatingforibs.com, here at

, and there is tons of information there on IBS. it is run by

HEATHER VAN NORRIS who has done extensive research on the subject.

There is also a message board for your mom to talk to others in the

same situation. she can also shop for supplements and other foods

there as well. TELL hEATHER LOUISE sent you and good luck.

Hello Chris,

people who have IBS are not all sensitive to the same

types of food. It helps some people to cut out dairy

and wheat products, but that doesn't help all IBS

patients.

For example, gluten and milk don't do me (IBS since

childhood) any harm at all, but anything rich in fibre

will. Also heavy foods like meat. Actually anything

that contains lots of protein or fat (i'm definitely

no candidate for an Atkins diet..).

To keep a diary of the foods eaten and also of the

stress level is a good idea. Once the connection

between a certain food item/stressy situation and IBS

is established, it can be avoided.

Most IBS patients report that they feel better when

they eat at fixed hours every day. The vast majority

is sensitive to onions, and also to garlic.

I've had the best results with a diet consisting of

lots of carbs, vegs that aren't too heavy in fibre,

fruit mixed with yoghurt or whipped cream, and no

solid foods in the evening, to give the bowel a rest

(only milk and soups).

The good thing about IBS is that i'm never ever going

to have to diet to loose weight ;-)

Good luck to your mum. I wish her all the best.

Vanessa

Stop eating Gluten products first. Gluten is found in Wheat and some

other grains. YOu may have an allergy to it. check w a

Gasteroenterology doctor or look for casein free and gluten free

diet receipes on the internet.
