Haines Superfruits! Good tasting but sometimes does not set up

well, I like to add a little less water than they say especially if

I am adding fruit. Also they do not have alot of different flavors,

just orange, cherry and strawberry.

I know that you can use agar-agar flakes, which is derived from a sea

vegetable. It is the best non animal substitute for gelatin. You can

usually find this at a health food store.

Hi :)

The most common vegetarian gelatin used by home cooks is agar-agar,

which comes in powder or flakes. The package directions will explain

how to use it.

Another thing that " gels " in a similar way is arrowroot.

Commercially you will see guar gum and xanthum gum used alot.. in soy

dairy-product subs like sour cream.

Good luck :-)

In the UK there's a product called Vege-Gel. It's unflavoured and based on

carageenan I think. Or one of the other seaweeds that act as gelling agents.

Some of quick setting flavoured jellies are carageenan, as are the ready

made individual jellies. These are supermarket varieties that are common

here - they're usually stocked right next to their gelatine counterparts.

There are also health food shop versions that I can't remember the brand

names of.

Hi Kristy,

I'm assuming you're somewhere in North America since you're calling jelly

" jello " , but if you have and Indian or Pakistani grocery shops near you they

might have some. There is a brand of jelly crystals from Pakistan that

taste just like I remember " real " jelly used to and isn't as " solid " as

agar. The texture is just like " real " jelly. Lots of flavours to choose

from and it sets quite quickly. Sometimes I can even find it in health food

shops. It comes in a little box.

Good luck in your search,

Jo.
