Guest guest
I was knocked off my bike 20 years ago and hit my left knee against a wall. Years of niggling but not acute pain have now become more serious. Probably arthritis but that knee is now not walking in a straight line and hurts. I take a vegan sourced Glycosamine with MSM but friend say to try Chondroitin. I can only find a fish source of Chondroitin and as a vegan I can't take it. Does anyone know of a vegan Chondroitin? Any other vegan advice for easing knee pain please? Geoff http://geoffnelder.com

Guest guest
Thanks Pat, You are right in that there is still no vegan Chondroitin product. The link you gave is for a site that gave advance notice of a vegan Chondroitin from DEVA. Deva then found they couldn't make it and so the advance adverts have been withdrawn. Thanks too, Penne. Yes, we have ibuprofen gels and other analgesics I use to get rid of the pain. Generally I put up with the niggling pain and only use analgesics while on a hike or a long hilly bike ride. I hoped not for pain relief but for a cure. If it gets worse I suppose surgery and a new knee is on the horizon. Off to the kitchen now to prepare a nut roast to same time tomorrow! Guest guest
Sorry, Geoff. I googled in a hurry and didn't read as much as I should have - blame it on the time of year I remember hearing some time ago that there was to be vegan chondroitin and therefore . . . Thanks for updating me on that. What a pest that is for you! New knee? Sounds tricky, although I know people who have them. Good luck - and enjoy whateveer it is you celebrate right now, if you celebrate right now (We don't.) And Happy New Year! Guest guest
I find the bio freeze much more powerful than any other product. Exercise does a lot for pain. I have done 2 half marathons, and I am in much better shape than before I started exercising. I have arthritis in my hands hip, knees. Guest guest
I agree with Pat that Chondroitin is only from animal sources. One thing that helps in general arthritic-type pain is to regularly take omega-3 fatty acid supplements. You can buy it made from seaweed. You don't have to take fish oil! Walnuts and flax seeds are also sources. It has been shown to be good for the heart and other things, too. Another thing you HAVE to do with arthritis is do range of motion exercises. The pain and stiffness only gets worse from disuse. (I know. I have arthritis and have had one hip replaced.) ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. ~.~ (my signature) from Maida Please sign the petition to allow pets, link in upper left at www.petsincondos.org Are you shopping online for the holidays? Guest guest
PS Hempseed nut is one of the best sources of protein period. It is also an incredible source of omega oils. - Maida Genser Wednesday, December 24, 2008 10:07 PM Re: need knee pain cure I agree with Pat that Chondroitin is only from animal sources. Guest guest
Can we please take this off-list now? Geoff, I do hope you find a cure - it's really too bad that there's not a vegan chondroitin (hey, they can put a man to walk on the moon, but they can't help this man to walk!). I wish we could help further, but perhaps some who have first-hand experience of something they have taken and which could help could write to you privately since, as we say, this group is 'the place for medical advice' - health and nutritional advice, vegan product advice, yes! All suggestions posted so far have been most appreciated. Thanks! Best, Pat

Guest guest
What you are missing here is that further help for Geoff would entail discussion of medical solutions to his health problem, not nutritional solutions or the information he originally requested on whether there was vegan chondroitin or a substitute for it. It's a pity, because one would hope to be able to help. If anyone can do so, I'd be most grateful, as Geoff is a valued member here. If you need further clarification, please write to me at vegetarianslimming-owner - okay? Happy to explain, but no more list time on explanations on my part. Many thanks! Guest guest
Before this disappears off list, thanks muchly to those who have emailed me with nutritional and exercise advice for my dodgy knee. Thanks particularly to Wani who emailed me offlist to emphasise the need to take magnesium rather than calcium for such problems. I do take DEVA's mix of vegan glycosamine and MSM but I needed to up the dose.
