Guest guest
Hi, everyone. My name is Trish, and I live in Oregon, a state in the northwestern part of the USA. We're in the Pacific Maritime climate, which is a mild zone 8. I'm not much of a gardener, but I do grow my own herbs, and love to use them in cooking. I just hit the double nickel -- age 55. Once I went through menopause, I started putting on more weight and having more trouble losing the extra kgs/lbs. My plan is to change the way I live, rather than do a temporary " diet. " Basically, I need to cut portions down and eat more fruits and veggies. I'm a high school/secondary school teacher, and my job keeps me pretty busy. I'd been going to the gym in the morning before school, but it's a hassle, and I did it inconsistently. I decided to switch exercise to yoga done at home and once a week at a yoga center. The campus of my school was designed by a southern California architect, so we have that sprawling campus layout of many separate single-story buildings. Needless to say, I walk a lot, and with 5-minute passing periods between classes, I walk fast! I figure I get enough aerobic exercise that way. I'm looking forward to reading tips, experiences, and recipes. I've been exploring slow-cooker recipes with one of Robin Robertson's cookbooks/cookery books. They're low fat and very tasty. I'm planning on making a cabbage soup with veggie sausages tomorrow. I'll let you all know how it went! Demographics are pretty basic, I guess :-) Married, no kids, vegetarian since before the dinosaurs had feathers -- okay, maybe not quite that long, but since the 70s. I've tried to become vegan but love cheese and dairy yogurt a little too much. Now I limit those and eat vegan meals several times a week. I hope everyone's holidays were wonderful. Cheers, Trish
Guest guest
Hi Trish - Nice to have you join this group! You have been veg a long time, so I guess you won't be asking a lot of questions about the lifestyle, but perhaps about our particular low-fat orientation. Maybe Just cutting down portions should help a lot of course, but getting that fat and oil out of your diet will help hugely. (I see you love the cheese and all that - but that's nearly totally animal fat.) Good for you for wanting to change your lifestyle to more healthy. You don't need to go to a gym to exercise, though - it's pretty easy to do a few minutes at a time in your own home. Curious about how much aerobic walking you are putting in? Try getting a pedometer - and see if you are doing more than 10,000 steps a day. If not (although you probably are if you do a lot of walking) you can do some running on the spot now and then in the privacy, as they say, of your own home. Exercise videos help too. And of course the yoga you are doing is excellent too - but not necessarily instead of the rest, right? We have lots of good recipes - check out our Files (access from the homepage) - and if there's something in particular you're looking for just shout out! We love to help Chat to you more later. Enjoy the group, okay? Best, Pat (Co-owner with Cindi) --- http://beanvegan.blogspot.com http://www.vegandonelight.com/spice " The world is a stage, but the play is badly cast.
