intro

So forgive me for posting to two groups at once, but I am too tired to post

two separate e-mails.

I am age 34, live in Washington, DC, and have been vegetarian just over a

year. I have essentially gone vegan; once I get rid of the nonvegan items I

had before I made my decision, I'll feel a lot better. I also have to bring

a treat to work on Fridays so I'm not tempted by the donuts; I have found a

couple of brands of vegan cookies that fill the bill, but to avoid too much

name-dropping, I won't tell you unless you ask. I am a member of Vegetarian

Society of DC, and I am active with Compassion Over Killing (www.cok.net), a

local animal advocacy group. My boyfriend of three years has been ovo-lacto

for about 10, but I've turned him on to soy milk and Tofutti treats.

I live with my beloved 11-year-old cat Tigger, who adopted me when she was

three years old. She's a very affectionate, playful cat. She loves to lick

the wrappers of my Tofutti Cuties (I have to tell her to let me eat in

peace, and I'll let her lick the wrapper). She's like my child.

I'm becoming fairly good at cooking, I think. I made brownies for my family

for Hanukkah, and they all loved them. None of my family members are

vegetarian, much less vegan, but they try to be supportive, even if they

think it's a bit of a pain. I think the worst thing anyone said was my

brother-in-law's statement that I was anthropomorphizing. Since they live

in Florida, they don't have to deal with it much, but when they visit in the

spring, as they intend to, I am determined to drag them all to the Vegetable

Garden in Rockville.
