Guest guest
Hi Jessica I don't know what could have gone wrong with your tempeh, but there are some great recipes on Recipezaar.com that are based on tempeh. I particularly like the Tempeh with 40 Cloves of Garlic, which is a lovely, rich, not overly garlicky, gravied stew, so don't be put off by the amount of garlic, and the Tempeh " Chicken " Salad is delicious on a sandwich. Tofu is one of my favorite things to eat; so I was disappointed the other night when I attempted to make tempeh: I followed the directions on the package (add a little oil and soy sauce and pan fry a few minutes on each side). It came out awful! It was so bad I couldn't finish it. The tempeh I used was from Trader Joe's, it's three-grain tempeh. What did I do wrong? Not only did it taste bad, it had a horrible, rubbery consistency. I have another package of this stuff to go through, so any suggestions on how to improve would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Guest guest
You didn't do anything wrong, that is how tempeh is. I have never liked it, I love tofu, but really don't like the taste of tempeh. Probably something to do with it being fermented. - jakrysty74 Veg-Recipes Wednesday, April 13, 2005 7:33 AM Tempeh question Hello Vegetarians, I'm not exactly a vegetarian, but I love to cook and experiment with new recipes. Guest guest
Did you slice it up first? I always cut my tempeh into ~1/4 " slices and cook in a little bit of olive oil. It gets a little crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. It's great in a wrap or on a pita with hummus. If you're still not having any luck, try using a different brand. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I used tempeh for the first time a few weeks ago and it came out interesting. I mixed it with sauteed brocoli rabe, a wild rice mix (the one they sell in the bulk containers at Whole Foods), along with lots of red pepper flakes, cumin and tons of garlic. The taste did take some getting used to, but it tasted ok, actually, in combination with all the other stuff. I usually am not a huge fan of brocoli rabe either, but somehow preparing it the way I did made it yummy. Jen " To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. Guest guest
I usually cook it slowly in barbecue sauce. Makes a great sandwich with onions and peppers! Please don't give up on it yet. I have never tried Trader Joe's tempeh, I would recommend trying a name brand. Guest guest
There are varying opinions on this tempeh. I happen to love it. It's more " chickeny " if you like that texture and less " mungy " than tofu. You should, however, slice it up in small cubes or slices because it is rubbery. It's a more successful meat substitute in my house (for picky kids) than tofu.
