Guest guest
I stay away from alcohols distilled from any of the " celiac grains " . I know it's said that it's distilled out of them, but I take no chances. I stick with rum drinks, wine.some vodkas are ok as is kahlua. All of those are also vegan with the exception of wine.you'd need to check on that. Rum is distilled from sugar and vodka from potatoes (check brands, some are from other stuff). Guest guest
Some excellent GF choices are white wine, red wine, potato vodka, cognac. There are, actually, quite a few alcohols that we can tolerate. Karina My Blog:: Recipes from a Gluten Free Goddess Tempting. Healthy. Guest guest
Since I am allergic to alcohol of any kind, the acceptance of distillation as safe for GF consumption hasn't affected me, but I have several friends who have tried and found it just fine. The same applies to vinegars. If you are concerned about having a reaction, why not try one of the vinegars first. The process is the same and in fact most vinegars have some alcohol in them anyway, although the percentage is less than you would find in spirits. Guest guest
Hi everyone A great gf beer that is available in Canada (it is brewed in Quebec) is La Messagere. It is made from rice, buckwheat, hops and and is really good. I'm fairly certian it can be ordered. Guest guest
I drink red wine on occasion (maybe once/mo.) - Bordeaux primarily - and have never had a problem. On very rare occasions I have a shot of Scotch ( less frequent than wine with no reaction). I think I am pretty sensitive, not as much as some who post here, and would expect to react particularly the Scotch if their was any gluten. Not a recommendation, just my personal experience. Roy FL On Behalf Of m k Friday, December 02, 2005 8:50 AM Distillation hi, i recently reread the claims that some of the alcohol would be considered gf after distillation. i have celiacs disease and get very, very sick if i eat anything that contains either wheat or gluten. the only grains i can tolerate are quina and brown rice. i would love to be able to have the occasional drink with my friends. has anyone tried these liquors and gotten sick? i am scared to try. thanks DSL Something to write home about. Guest guest
In reply to the paragraph at the end of this e-mail (sorry, my program's funny today): My understanding is that the gliadin (gluten protein) molecule is too large to " get through " the distillation process. There is a good explanation of this on celiac.com, and distilled vinegars/alcohol are officially on most gf recommendations/lists. Hope this helps, Tree I stay away from alcohols distilled from any of the " celiac grains " . I know it's said that it's distilled out of them, but I take no chances.
