Welcome, Judy. You're doing very well indeed for just a few weeks into

vegetarianism. Congratulations! I did the change to vegan over time too, and

some prefer it that way. Vegan at home, non-vegan (but of course vegetarian) out

except I wouldn't order eggs or a cheese sandwich or anything like that. After a

while it got easier for me to just say 'no eggs, no dairy' when I was out in

addition to the 'no dead animals' :) But I guess it depends on where you like to

eat and with whom. You do your best in the early stages and after that it comes

more easily, eh?

As for cheese and other dairy, since you're on a slimming group which is also

concerned with health, it's good to remember that cheese and cream and butter

are not good for anyone, and that they put the pounds on quickly. So since you

are tending towards veganism, it might be a good idea to ask for your pizzas 'no

cheese'. We do that all the time, and it's amazing how much nicer all those

roasted veggies (or whatever) taste when you can really TASTE them LOL!

I have to say, though, that if you want to be vegetarian or vegan you would do

well to learn to cook a few simple and quick dishes - check out our Files

section - because the world isn't really made for our needs, alas. However,

there are things you can get in cans - e.g. seasoned beans (watch out for pork

on the ingredients list, though!) and others that come pretty well ready to go,

like tofu or seitan meets - soy bakon, soy hamm, soy chikken and there's a

smoked turkkey that I rather like now and then. These 'fakes' (although they're

real food, of course) are great for sandwiches and salads or, for the larger

'cuts', heating up and having as a chikken breast on a plate. You will know

about soy burgers, of course, and various things like that - and oh yes, frozen

cheese-less pizzas and the like. Look around - these things will help you

through the first few weeks or months. Just be sure you get lots of lovely fresh

veggies too - salads are quick and

easy, eh?

Let us know how you're doing and ask if you need any suggestions, answers, blah

blah blah.

Best, Pat (Co-owner with Cindi

Hi Judy and welcome to our group!

Sounds like you are on a good path of changing your eating habits. Having some

sort of meal plan in place is helpful so you can be prepared for when you're

hungry. Many vegetarian recipes yield a lot of food and most keeps or freezes

well for easy meals to heat up/defrost when that hunger sneaks up on you.

Like Pat said, we have a lot of great ideas in our files so please make sure to

check those out when you get a chance.

My name is Judy G. I'm a single 50 something female who lives near

Dayton,

Ohio, USA.

I'm a new (read couple of weeks) Vegetarian with Vegan tendencies. In other

words I eat nothing that has to be killed (meat or fish of any kind). But I

do eat limited amounts of eggs and milk products. For example, I'll eat

cheese pizza out, but at home I have no cheese. I'll eat a baked good with

egg in it, but not an omelet. It's fairly easy to do at home, but with

friends it is difficult.

Having said it's easy at home. I'm eating a lot of plain vegs and fresh

fruit. I've never been a cook. I've read through a few cookbooks and

copied 5 or 6 recipes, but not " gotten around " to cooking them. I notice

I'm hungry only when I'm starving and then I don't feel like waiting for

food to cook. I've got to get past this.

I'm looking for community support for Vegan eating and weight loss, recipes,

etc.
