Guest guest
Omega 3's can make a huge difference to depression. Fish oil or flax oil capsules, or fish a few times a week, or ground flax and walnuts daily. Lots of dark green leafy vegetables. You can also get omega 3 from algae. Guest guest
If we don't eat meat, why would we take fish oil capsules? That has been suggested to me by a carnivore but I didn't expect that suggestion here. Guest guest
Whoops, my bad, I was thinking this was on a different list. My apologies! We use flax, walnuts, and dark greens here. Guest guest
I'm very sorry , Pam, but although your message might be sound by many criteria, I have to remind you that this is a vegetarian group. Fish is NOT vegetarian at all - please understand that But thanks for caring. Guest guest
Thanks, Pam. But please remember this is a vegetarian group - okay???? Gotta keep the faith, gal!. Veggie good; non-veggie not so good. Appreciate your error (and embarrassment - oops it's happened to so many, but . . . ) Loveya! Guest guest
Quite agree!!!! Fish in any form is not acceptable to a vegetarian. Full Stop. You would not, therefore, take fish oils. Please understand that not all members here are really vegetarian (sigggghhhhh) but are trying to be vegetarian sometime in their lifetimes (siggggghhhhh). Please know that we do care for vegetarian sensibilities (as well as we understand the wannabees who cannot yet come to it). Hugs and love from someone who would not eat f*sh under any condition. Guest guest
I am on many omni lists as well, including for bipolar and other mental illness. Please note that Diana specifically asked about fish, and as well as acknowledging that as a source, I suggested a number of vegetarian sources as alternatives. Also note that she specifically said that she is not a vegetarian. I made the mistake of not glancing at the address line to check for dietary constraints (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) which I would normally do, as she had suggested fish herself. Again, I apologize to all. I was trying to help and it was a simple oversight. Pam On Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 10:27 PM, drpatsant <drpatsant wrote: > Thanks, Pam. Guest guest
We should just feel sorry for & try to educate the poor creatures. LOL It just reminded of a time when a NURSE suggested that I eat more fish because my good cholesterol is too low. When I told her that I didn't eat meat, she suggested that I take fish oil capsules. I was speechless. I didn't know whether to laugh or scream. I really do appreciate that many people find it difficult to change lifelong habits. Like me with sugar!!! Guest guest
Yes I know what you mean. I was on the telephone to another city yesterday, planning to visit an elderly relative in a Seniors' home. The nurse said that rather than take our relative out for lunch that it'd be better to lunch there - 'complimentary of course' (too kind!). I replied that my dh and I ate only vegan (and I explained what that meant), so it would be better for us to grab lunch ahead of time elsewhere. Oh no, she insisted, we could dine there as long as she warned the dietician to provide us with a nice egg salad. Does she think eggs grow on trees, I wonder. I explained again but have no hopes. We'll be packing sandwiches, I'm afraid LOL So yes the confusion about what is and what isn't 'animal' is huge. Some think 'meat' means beef and/or other red meat. Others think it includes only mammals (pity those poor 'roos!). Others think a vegetarian IS a vegetarian as long as only wild 'game', including so-called game birds, are consumed along with water creatures rather than domestic beasts. As for 'animal products' - gelatin and meat stock, marshamallows, may kinds of sweets/candy and, for vegans, milk and cheese, casein, eggs, etc. - oh don't even try to go there. As for fish - oh hey, they don't seem to count. I've been at this for many years now and sometimes I get really frustrated. Needless to say, my reminders along these lines are seldom appreciated. I can live with that. As for lifelong habits, people would change them fast enough if they were properly motivated, I would think. The fact is, they aren't so they don't. We try to educate, as you suggest. That should give motivation (or maybe 'should' but doesn't?) Guest guest
I'm afraid I'll have to admit that for a long time I didn't realize that I shouldn't eat gelatin and marshmallows. I should have realized but I never even thought about it. And then there are people like my sister that think I can only eat salads and things made specifically for vegetarians. Part of that is the fact that here in the south cooks often season many veggies with meat.
