I was rather disapointed a couple of saturdays ago, I went to the

opening of a new community garden project here in Southend, there

was a small barbeque arranged, and an announcement was made that

there would be vegeburgers served. So i qued up with 2 of my

children for half an hour so, but when we got to the front of the

queue immeadiatly observed that although the vegeburgers were on a

seperate grill, they were being served up using the same tongs as

the meat products, so were consequently covered with dripping animal

fats!!! So (even though it was obvious...) I asked if they were

using the same tongs to handle the meat as the veggie burgers... the

reply was a " yeah? " as if to say whats wrong with that then??? So I

replied that they had just excluded (at least) 3 people from being

able to eat at the event (best I could think of at the time as I was

a bit shocked..). The kids, who were hungry and moaning anyway, then

had to have it explained to them that we couldn't eat the veggie

burgers, so in the end I took them home and we made our own (which

they really enjoyed). I did put in a complaint to one of the project

organisers about this incident, but I felt it was a shame as I

support the project and intend to have further involvement...

BTW the guy I complained to was sympathetic, his reply was that he

couldn't believe that they could fuck up on something so basic, and

he was going to speak to them about it...

Even leaving aside the vegan/veggie issues I can't believe they were

unaware of basic food hygene practices on cross-contamination...

Thanks for the warning Graham, yes that is pretty revolting.

Personally I don't mind them cooking the vegan stuff with Linda

McCartney's or other veggie bangers and burgers that are nearly but

not quite vegan, but I would certainly not like meaty juices and fats

dripping on my vegan food. The woman involved in running the

fireworks night sounded pretty respectful and says she has a lot of

veggie friends and her boss at work is vegan, so let's hope it will

be OK.
