Guest guest
Well, technically some of the nut butters are fruits too (smile). BL I've read countless articles that state that fruit should be eaten alone and not mixed with other foods.... yet have also come across a ton of recipes that include fruit with other foods (such as veggies, grains, nuts/seeds, etc....). I absolutely love eating and Apple with raw nut butter, but am now hesitant to do so. I guess eating fruit with anything causes it to ferment and causes gas. Whats the final word? (Cuz I sure do miss my apples and nut butter!) And if fruit + other food is a no-no, why are there so many recipes that put these foods together? Oh, and if fruit and nut butter is out, is something like pumpkin seed butter ok, since pumpkins are a fruit?
Guest guest
Hi Shelby, You've asked a good question about food combining. Generally, food combination principles say that fruit should be eaten " alone " or " with other fruit " . Botanically, a fruit is the fruit of a plant and includes what we generally consider as " fruits " (apples, oranges, grapes, etc.); grains (which are the fruit of types of grasses); seeds and nuts (also fruits of a plant). Other foods that are botanically fruits, but that we generally consider as vegetables are these fruits of plants (cucumbers, green pepper, tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, pinto beans, other beans, etc). Vegetables are stalks, leaves, and roots of plants (celery, lettuce, potatoes, spinach, etc). An apple served with a nut butter is a combination that most of those who study food combining would endorse. Of course, there are probably sub-groups who will take food combining principles to another extreme and they may have different " rules " , but generally, when following the botanical catagories. . .these principles apply. The reason you wouldn't combine fruits and vegetables (and/or meat and dairy if not vegan) is that they digest at different rates in the body. Hope this helps. . . Guest guest
I know that apples are commonly combined with vegetables in recipes. This seems to be the only fruit that is. Maybe apples are " neutral " or something? Even Hallelujah Acres (which talks a lot about food combining, and eating fruit separately) makes this exception (such as in juicing an apple along with carrots). One more thing they say at HA is to eat melons TOTALLY alone, with NO other fruits (not even berries). Not sure why offhand without going back into my books upstairs. But that's not something I will probably adhere to all the time--I do love my fruit salads! Marilyn

It's because melons digest very quickly (about 30 minutes) so they are eaten alone or before other foods so they aren't slowed down in the digestion process. ~ LaDonna ~

Guest guest
I read once that its best to eat melons in the morning alone. because they are so easily digestible, its gives your system a nice start for the day instead of loading it with harsher foods which then will slow your system down and cause gas. When I started eating a piece of mellon in the morning before my breakfast I saw a noticable difference.
