Guest guest
can i borrow some kale? cats dug up and played with all mine yarrow Dec 27, 2008 12:12 PM lentil stew I made a wonderful lentil stew recently. Put 1 cup lentils and 2-3 cups water in 6 qt. pot, bring to a boil, and simmer about a half hour. While lentils are simmering, chop up several stalks of celery (including leaves), a few parsnips, a few carrots, and some winter squash (or add already baked winter squash at the end of cooking time). Add chopped vegetables to pot (it should be almost full) and simmer another 10-15 minutes or so. I also had a big bunch of kale from the garden, so I sliced thinly and mixed it in just before I turned off the heat. It was ambrosial! And even better the next day. Guest guest
This kale would be cat heaven: the stems are 8 ft. high, and the purplish leafy topknots would probably be tantalizingly out of reach. But they'd enjoy shredding the sprawling 4-ft. one. Guest guest
which is basically what happened. the kale, chard and related greens turned into one big kitty toy plan on running string around the outside of the raised beds, and see if that slows them down on rolling around in there. the broken pots surely didn't...nor cayenne pepper... yarrow Dec 27, 2008 6:57 PM Re: lentil stew This kale would be cat heaven: the stems are 8 ft. high, and the purplish leafy topknots would probably be tantalizingly out of reach. Guest guest
A friend was telling me today that she's used pruned-away rose canes twined through apricot trees to keep the birds and squirrels from helping themselves to the fruit. The critters try once or twice, then decide it isn't worth the trouble. Guest guest
Here is my easy, easy recipe for lentil soup. By " sauteing " the onions and garlic in vegetable stock instead of oil, it is very low cal and nearly fat free. I make it more like a lentil stew, but feel free to add more liquid if you like it thinner, like a soup. 2 C lentils 1 medium sweet onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, chopped 1 can diced tomatoes 1 C vegetable stock 6 C water bay leaf salt, pepper to taste - heavy on the pepper " Saute " onion and garlic in vegetable stock. Add tomatoes, lentils, and seasonings, bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes. Adjust seasonings and enjoy!
