I've never had that, but tonic water is supposed to help, something about the quinine in it. My problem is that most tonic water has corn syrup in it, which upsets my digestive system. The stuff that doesn't have corn syrup has artificial sweeteners, which I cannot have, either. ygg
Guest guest
Hi Mike; I looked NuLev up on the net. It appears to be an anti-spasmodic used for irritable bowel syndrom. So it may help reduce the symptoms but I wouldn't call it a " fix " really, just a " bandaid " . I didn't look long enough to find out what the side-effects typically are, but drugs usually do have at least some. It may say on the packaging. Deborah Hello Group, My wife has been gluten free for over 3 years now and the longer that she goes without eating it the worst the reaction is when she does by mistake. Last weekend she was glutened by mistake in a resturant that we have eaten at for over a year problem free. Steak, baked potato, and cruton free salad with O & V. Well 20 minuntes to the letter after we left she was in the bathroom and for the next 3 days she had the bloating, cramping, and joint pain. This time however she had blood in her stool which had never happened before. This cleared up after about 5 days but we went to the gi Dr. anyway to ask about a " quick fix " . We were given some samples of (NuLev) A tablet that is orally disintegrating under the tounge. Has anyone here had any experience with this R/X? I hope that we never have to use the samples that we have but incase I would like to know that it will work. Thanks Mike aka tenderhusband to Dacry
Guest guest
The blood in the stool is possibly caused by the damage the gluten did to the villi. Gluten proteins are actually sharp and probably do damage to everyone but in a Celiac, the villi do not regenerate and this causes the body to attack itself. I would use the tonic water over the nuLev but another alternative is AlkaSeltzer Gold (contains no aspirin or ibuprofen as this acidify the body). Guest guest
Nice to see a concerned husband taking initiative, cheers to you, Mike! I haven't heard of Nulev but worry about the side affects as I've seen others mention. When I have had a reaction to hidden gluten I go see my accupuncturist right away. He's able to treat the symptoms and help get my system back on track. We have to remember that Celiac is an autoimmune disease so its important to take steps (I feel) to keep the immune system strong. Addressing the whole body is the approach I take and it works well for me. I get nervous with over the counter fixes because they cause other long term problems to the stomach lining and such. Natropaths, herbalists and accupuncturists are very good at addressing the gluten poisons. They can also address the blood in the stool. I've had that happen several times and its the inflamation in the intestines that burst or get split as a result of the toxins. A couple days of miso, rice and warm sea salt water has always helped that clear up for me. Hope this helps. As a side note. You mention that she had a steak. My natropath (and I) feel that digesting meat is a difficult thing for healing intestines to process. It takes years for our intestines to recover from gluten. Perhaps a vegie diet would help. Just had to get my veg-cents in. Don't mean to offend. Much health, Renee , " Mike " <tenderhusband wrote: > > Hello Group, My wife has been gluten free for over 3 years now and > the longer that she goes without eating it the worst the reaction is > when she does by mistake. > > Last weekend she was glutened by mistake in a resturant that we have > eaten at for over a year problem free. I mean, there certainly may have been some hidden gluten in the meal somewhere, but meat can cause gastro-intestinal problems too. Reactivity to gluten can vary between people, some are more sensitive than others. If the cow from which the meat came was grain-fed, I wonder if that might result in a reaction. I dunno if that is possible, but something about the meat twigged my attention too. In any case, I agree with you promoting the health advantages of veggie diet. :-) All the best, Deborah
