Guest guest
Hey! I'm new to the group, but not new to veganism. I've been gluten-free for over a year, but have just recently found out that I am also intolerant to soy. I'm kinda freaking out, cuz I relied on soy for protein, calories, as well as vitamins/minerals (fortified soymilk). Any suggestions? I'm currently following a raw food diet, since its the only way I can eat symptom-free. I need more protein sources... I've been relying on nuts/seeds/beans, as well as ANDI bars (wheat/soy/caesin-free protein bars...yum!) Help! Shelby
Guest guest
Shelby--It isn't difficult to get the amount of protein you need from plant sources. Do you drink almond, cashew, or rice milk? That would be one way to get some. But the amount of protein the human body actually requires is MUCH less than the mainstream sources would have you believe. Are you getting at least 20-30 grams a day? That's plenty, according to things I have been reading lately, such as " Examining the Hallelujah Diet " (a Christian raw vegan program). I'm sure if you add up your daily intake, you'll be reassured. Your protein intake is most likely adequate. I believe most people worry unnecessarily about protein, probably due to all the meat advertising or something. Actually, too much protein is a MUCH more common problem! And too much protein leeches calcium from the bones, leading to osteoporosis! So a lower protein diet is actually better for you. Just some thoughts. Guest guest
Dr. John McDougall explains in the following article how we get all the protein we need ....and MORE ....on a whole foods, vegan diet, even without soy or nuts. http://www.nealhendrickson.com/mcdougall/040100puproteinoverload.htm " The China Study " (highly recommended reading!) is a very new book out by Dr. T. Colin Campbell from Cornell University reporting on his lifelong work with protein. He also explains why/how we need to be much more concerned about getting too much protein rather than enough. Wishing you all the best, Deborah
