Charleen--Each family handles it differently. I personally have " evolved " as

a parent over time, and my responses have changed (and probably mellowed with

age :) ). I allow my kids to make the choices for themselves most of the time

right now. But if the food is an OBVIOUS problem, I tell them why it's a

no-no, and they accept what I'm telling them. For me, at this point, while I

avoid

meat, my family still eats some because my husband does not want to

transition. But the kids are given the choice to eat or not to eat--and they do

NOT

always choose to eat meat. I am stricter about junk foods containing

" artificials "

because they pose an immediate problem for at least two of my kids. That's

where I'm at right now. Marilyn

Hi Charleen,

I wish I was where you are before I had children. Unfortunately, I wasn't

eating healthy myself until my younger son was too old to be interested.

He's almost 18 and refuses to eat my " health food " . :o[ But he has a friend

whose family is vegetarian. Richard has been coming to our house for seven

years. I can tell you that this young man chooses healthy food over the

junk [when given the choice] almost every time, even though he is exposed

to all manner of junk at school and at friends' homes. He never eats meat,

of course.

So I think the key here is starting them off right from the beginning with

delicious, healthy food. They will develop a taste for it that will stay

with them for the rest of their lives. They may have junk from time to time

elsewhere, but they'll always prefer " home cooking " .

Hi Charleen

Good to know at least you're going to feed your children differently.

In my home, there are hardly any junk food things. They get dehydrated

fruit, nuts, fresh fruit, soy yoghurt. Most times they are happy with

fruit and raw nuts. When there's a party, we bring our own stuff,

because no other mum is going to bother making a gluten free cake for

us or anything like that. They of course love eating cake and snacks,

but we don't have them very often, even coloured candy, etc. They do

get ill even eating too much of the " healthier " snacks, like home made

GF cakes, cookies, etc.
