Smart Balance (lite) is also vegan (although the regular is not) and it's

available in most supermarkets and WalMarts.

It all depends on what you need to replace the margarine in.

- We do have a few recipes in the files.

Recipes Posted to VGF > Dairy Alternatives > " Butter " , Oil and

Margarine.

- The margarine in some recipes can be replaced with oil.

- Avocado can be spread on bread instead of margarine.

I don't have that book Marilyn, do you think you could send me the recipe

privately to preserve copyright?

Millet butter is easy to make, and is a great margarine substitute. I got the

recipe from the McDougall and Newstart cookbooks. Marilyn

Hi all

Thanks for the info on margarine substitutes. I live in Perth

Australia, so I haven't found those brands here. Reason why I ask is

because of my children's dairy intolerance and that magarine is pretty

bad stuff to eat. I would like to use it as a spread or in a baked

item, I suppose the best is to stick to cold-pressed oils?

I am not interested in just substituting a product for another for

taste, but rather for health. If there's no good subs for butter then

I will accept it.

A quick google search turns up many millet butter references (and a

couple recipe variations):

http://www.google.com/search?

client=safari & rls=en & q=millet+butter & ie=UTF-8 & oe=UTF-8

:)

Millet *does* taste rather buttery on its own. I sometimes fry up

previously cooked millet--it's rather like polenta, but tastes *good*.

I also like to use millet to add body to chili.

Tracey have you tried Melrose omega care ? It doesn't contain any

hydrogenated fats and I believe it is now vegan. It works well in

cooking but does have a slightly bitter taste that kids may not

like.

Nuttelex is also vegan and contains very little trans fats.

Who'da thought there'd be so many millet butter recipes? I found a few in

other cookbooks I had when I was searching last night, too. No shortage, that's

for sure! Some have coconut, some have cashews, some do not have either. Millet

is good. :) Marilyn

Hi Kim

Thanks for the tip on Melrose Omega Care, maybe I'll give that a shot.

I wasn't sure how healthy it was for the children to eat Nuttelex so

I didn't get it. I just don't want them to have any long term ill

effects.

Hi Tracey, have you tried coconut butter? My kids like it, and it's

very healthy. I get it from Miss Roben's.
