I make a lemon glaze with sugar and freshly squeezed lemon juice and a bit of water. ygg
Guest guest
Michelle believe it or not there are actually some commercial frosting which are dairy free and gluten free. If you look for something with the kosher marking " parve " or pareve on it, this product contains no dairy under jewish religious observance. Companies are closely supervised by a specially trained rabbi to receive the right to use this marking on their products so you can trust it. Last I heard duncan hines had at least two flavours that had this marking and which contain no other animal products, but it's been awhile since I used it. Generally when I make frosting, I use powdered sugar (we call it icing sugar in canada) which is a blend of finely ground sugar mixed with corn starch. I add the powdered sugar to a little soy or coconut milk and keep adding until I get the consistency I need. It's very sweet but if you make it think the spices of the gingerbread will cut the sweetness some. HTH BL

Guest guest
Please pardon me if this has already been discussed, because I may have missed it, but just to make sure it gets covered, regular icing sugar has wheat starch in it... at least the kind that is available where I live. Deborah Vanilla-coconut icing... 1.5 cups confectioners sugar
Guest guest
Oooh, that's something to watch out for. I just checked the bag. Mine is organic, vegan and GF. I didn't realize It varied from brand to brand. Thanks for the clarification. -------------- Original message ---------------------- " Deborah Pageau " <dpageau

I've only ever seen wheat starch on one brand and that was years ago. ygg
Guest guest
Hi, Michele & all: On 2/8/06, michele <michelephunter wrote: > > I am new to the board and am happy to have found you! I make all my icing using a safe margarine (dairy-free and gluten-free and vegan) with icing sugar. You can add a couple drops of vanilla extract or any other extract to flavor as needed. Others have mentioned that icing sugar may have wheat starch, so be sure to check your label. I'm in Canada, so our icing sugar doesn't have wheat in it.
