Guest guest
Well, the article looks interesting, but I am not sure that a digetive enzyme will be the whole answer to CD. And if the gluten protein is degraded before it reaches the small intestine, doesn't that mean it's not available for digestion and there the nutrition is removed anyway - so why eat it? Guest guest
Ingestion of an effective gluten enzyme supplement makes accidental reactions much less likely. Enzyme supplements can be taken with a meal, even when no gluten is " knowingly " eaten. *If* there is any gluten in the meal, the person may be saved what would have formerely been a puzzling reaction. I've always found accidental exposure particularly annoying because I will have done my best to get a safe meal. Under normal conditions, we produce digestive enzymes in our bodies to take apart protein chains. It's a normal, necessary component of healthy digestion. Gluten intolerance occurs when the persons body fails to produce the enzyme to take the gluten chain apart, resulting in intact protein chains entering the blood stream where they trigger immune reaction. Proteins are long chains of amino acids. Specific enzymes dismantle each type of protein. This is necessary for the amino acids to be absorbed. Taking an effective supplemental gluten enzyme would mean that a gluten-intolerant person would be able to digest and utilize the amino acids in the gluten protein chain. If this enzyme supplement proves to be effective, we may have a whole new range of freedom in our lives! Guest guest
Except that this isn't the natural enzyme that we produce to deal with gluten and privious trials of such a synthetic enzyme proved ineffective since the previous possibilities couldn't survive in the environment of the acidic stomach. I know that some enzyme therapy is effective, but I am afraid this may fall into the category of believing there is a pill to cure everything and will encourage people to be less vigilant of their health. Also, I am not sure that such an enzyme would be helpful to those who are not CD, but would mislead them into believing they could just use a pill instead of the diet.
