Amy, would you mind sharing with us the specifics that you wish Dr. McDougall

had included? It would help us in writing to him, if we have ideas of

suggestions for improvement.

Thanks,

LaDonna

Fw: The McDougall Newsletter - September 2005

I am passing this on to our group, mostly because I am so dissappointed in the

article about CD. I wrote to Dr. Mcdougall and I hope you will too. I am glad

he wrote about it, I just wish he had gotten better information first.

Could It Be Celiac Disease?

Intestinal problems that linger despite adherence to the

McDougall Diet may be the result of celiac disease (CD). As many as one in every

hundred people-1% of the population-is affected by CD, a condition caused by

gluten-protein molecules most commonly found in wheat, barley, and rye.1 Celiac

disease prevents the small intestine from effectively absorbing necessary

nutrients.

LaDonna-

Her are just a few of the points that I made. There are many more

My first dissappointment had to do with the effects of undiagnosed CD- There

are many more symptoms than what was listed. The main symptom that was not

listed is being very over weight, also, general aches and pains, acne, Fatigue

Ect...

Secondly, in the USA oats are not acceptable for CD. Which was not out lined I

think well. It lead to the thinking of oats as an okay food source.

Thirdly, Dermatitis Herpetiformis is CD! It is not just another condition

As for infants and prevention. It is genetic.. and it can be triggered on

anytime in your life.

I was very dissappointed as it felt like he was just another uneducated doctor,

who really does not know or understand this condition. I felt this article

could lead many to wrong conclusions, and therefore bad health and choices.

One thing he did not say, which is fine, but I find very interesting is that it

takes a child an average of 6-18 months to get diagnosed with CD. A man 1-3

years.. but for Women it can take 10 or more years. I think this article

supports the kind of thinking in the medical community that leads to adults,

esp. women not being diagnosed for such a long time.

Sorry, I will get off my soap box now :-(

I also get his newsletter, and found that he did not EMPHASIZE that

you can't eat gluten in small amounts. It seemed in the article, to

my understanding, that he figured that you would consume some

gluten.......

Also, the sourdough mentioning didn't help. Maybe someone would eat

it and think they were cool.

Those are really good points that I did not even catch. It would be great for

you to write him and point it out. He e-mailed me back and just said thank you

for the thoughtful comments. So no big deal.. I was really nice about it,

because I really like him a lot.
